What this service is
Structured learning beats scrolling for technique you can actually apply
Most owners have already watched dozens of free dog training videos. The problem is not access to information; it is sequence. Free content gives you isolated techniques with no order, no criteria for moving on, and no way of knowing whether the technique matches your dog's actual problem. Our courses give you the whole progression in the right order, with the mechanics explained properly.
Each course is self-paced video training you keep access to, built around the same reward-based, positive-reinforcement method we use in person. You practise at your own speed, rewatch the parts you need, and work in short sessions that fit around a normal week rather than clearing an evening for a class.
The current standalone courses cover Teach Your Dog to Walk on a Loose Lead, and Dealing with Aggression and Reactivity in Dogs. A guide for owners and trainers. Standalone course pricing runs from £30 to £150 depending on the depth of the course. The monthly membership, at £43 per month, gives ongoing support and live group calls for owners who want continuity rather than a single purchase.
Nothing in any course involves prong collars, e-collars, slip leads or check chains. Every technique taught is one we would use on our own dogs and in a client's living room.
Who it's for
- Owners outside our in-person travel area, anywhere in the world
- People on a budget who want expert method rather than free guesswork
- Owners who want to start immediately rather than wait for an appointment
- Anyone working between 1-to-1 sessions who wants structured homework
- Trainers and rescue volunteers wanting a clear reference on reactivity
- Shift workers who cannot commit to fixed class times
When to get help
- Your dog pulls on the lead and you want to start tonight
- You are dealing with reactivity and need a proper framework, not clips
- You have had conflicting advice and want one coherent method
- You want to keep momentum after in-person sessions finish
- You want ongoing support and live group calls rather than a one-off
- You are preparing for a new dog or puppy before it arrives
What happens if it's left
Free advice is expensive when it is the wrong advice
The internet's dog training content is unfiltered, and a great deal of it is actively harmful. Punish the growl. Flood the dog to socialise it. Use a slip lead for pulling. Be the pack leader. Every one of those pieces of advice is popular, easy to find, and creates cases we then have to unpick. Usually with a dog whose warning signals have been suppressed and whose owner has lost confidence entirely.
The subtler cost is wasted time. A dog that practises pulling, barking or ignoring recall for another six months while its owner tries technique after technique in random order has not stood still. It has got better at the behaviour you do not want. Behaviour problems have momentum, and unstructured effort does not stop it.
There is also the confidence cost. Owners who try five approaches and see none of them work conclude either that they are bad at this or that their dog is untrainable. Neither is usually true. What they lack is sequence, criteria and feedback. Knowing what 'good enough to move on' looks like at each stage.
Dog training is an unregulated industry in the UK, which means the loudest voice online is not necessarily a qualified or experienced one. Paying £30 for a structured course built on 17+ years of casework removes the guesswork about whose advice you are following.
The most common mistakes we're called in to undo
- Collecting techniques instead of following a progression, so nothing gets to the generalisation stage.
- Applying a reactivity technique to a frustration problem, or a frustration technique to a fear problem.
- Buying equipment first. A slip lead, an anti-pull harness, a corrective collar. Instead of learning the mechanics.
- Practising in long sessions once a week rather than short sessions most days.
- Moving to harder environments before the current step is genuinely easy.
- Assuming a course replaces a behavioural assessment in a case involving a bite.
- Starting three courses at once so the dog is being trained in three directions.
How we work
A structured plan, not a one-off lesson you have to interpret yourself
Step 1
Pick the right starting point
Choose a standalone course for a specific problem, or the membership if you want ongoing support and live group calls alongside your training.
Step 2
Get instant access
Courses are self-paced video, available immediately after purchase, so you can start the same evening rather than waiting for an appointment.
Step 3
Work through the progression
Each module builds on the last with clear criteria, so you always know what to practise and when your dog is ready to move on.
Step 4
Practise in short daily sessions
The courses are designed around a few short sessions a day rather than long ones, because that is how dogs actually learn.
Step 5
Get support where you need it
Members bring their cases to live group calls. Anyone can add a remote 1-to-1 session if a specific problem needs individual eyes.
Step 6
Generalise and maintain
The final stages take the behaviour into real environments and give you a maintenance routine so progress does not decay.
What you get out of it
Specific outcomes you can measure in weeks, not vague promises
Start tonight for £30
No waiting list and no travel. The lowest-cost route into properly structured, reward-based training.
The right order, not random clips
A tested progression with clear criteria removes the guesswork that stalls most self-taught owners.
Rewatch as often as you need
Unlike a live class, you can replay the mechanics until your timing and reward placement are right.
Available anywhere
Nationally and worldwide, so geography and travel time stop being a factor in getting good help.
Ongoing support with membership
At £43 per month you get live group calls and continuity rather than a single purchase and silence.
Same method as our 1-to-1 work
Reward-based throughout, with no aversive equipment taught or recommended at any stage.

The courses currently available
Two standalone courses cover the problems we are asked about most. Teach Your Dog to Walk on a Loose Lead takes lead mechanics from foundations through to real streets, pressure information, position value, reward placement, and generalisation to distractions. Dealing with Aggression and Reactivity in Dogs is a guide for owners and trainers, covering assessment, thresholds, desensitisation and counter-conditioning, disengagement skills and honest risk management.
Standalone course prices sit between £30 and £150 depending on depth. The monthly membership, at £43 per month, is for owners who want continuous support: ongoing content plus live group calls where you can bring your own dog's situation for discussion.

Course, membership or 1-to-1: choosing honestly
A course is the right choice when the problem is well-defined and mechanical. Pulling, recall, general manners. And you are able to follow a written and video progression yourself. It is excellent value and it works for a large proportion of owners.
Membership suits owners who want the ongoing accountability of live calls, who have more than one thing they are working on, or who are between 1-to-1 sessions and want continuity. It is also useful for volunteers and professionals who want steady access to method and case discussion.
A 1-to-1 session. In person within our service area, or remote by video anywhere. Is the right choice when the case needs assessment. That includes any bite history, sudden behaviour change, severe separation distress, and situations where you have tried a plan and it is not moving. We will always tell you when a case needs assessment rather than a course, because selling you the wrong product wastes your money and your dog's time.
How the training method works, and who built the courses
Every course is built on marker-based positive reinforcement: a clear signal marking the exact behaviour you want, high reinforcement rates while the dog is learning, defined criteria for progression, and staged generalisation to harder environments. That structure is what turns 'my dog can do it in the kitchen' into 'my dog can do it on Byres Road'.
John McGuigan has 17+ years' experience across family homes, rescue shelters and courtrooms, speaks internationally, and holds the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Professional qualification. Dog training is an unregulated industry in the UK and qualifications like this are issued by private training providers rather than regulatory bodies, so we ask you to judge the courses on 17+ years of experience, 185 Google reviews and courtroom-tested behavioural work. Helen Hutcheson works alongside John across the business.
No course teaches, demonstrates or recommends prong collars, e-collars, slip leads or check chains. If you have been told to use one, the aggression and reactivity course explains what that equipment does to the behaviour you are trying to change.
What you need, and what the courses do not replace
Practically, you need a well-fitted harness, a fixed lead, a long line for recall and decompression work, food your dog genuinely values, and ten to fifteen minutes a few times a day. A phone camera is useful, filming yourself is the fastest way to spot your own timing errors, and it is what we ask for in remote sessions anyway.
Courses do not replace veterinary care. Sudden behaviour change, pain-related sensitivity or severe anxiety should be discussed with your vet, and where medication is being considered that decision sits with your vet or a veterinary behaviourist. They also do not replace a formal behavioural assessment where there is a bite history or legal proceedings, that is expert witness work and needs a case-specific assessment.
- A well-fitted Y or H shaped harness, a fixed lead and a long line for outdoor work
- High-value food rewards and a treat pouch
- Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a day
- A phone camera to review your own timing
- A vet check where the history suggests pain or sudden change
Questions we're asked every week
Straight answers before you get in touch
How much do the online courses cost?
Standalone courses run from £30 to £150 depending on depth. The monthly membership, which includes live group calls, is £43 per month.
How long do I have access for?
Standalone courses are self-paced, so you work through them in your own time and revisit the modules as you need. Membership access runs for as long as your monthly subscription is active.
Which course should I start with?
If pulling on the lead is your main problem, start with Teach Your Dog to Walk on a Loose Lead. If your dog barks, lunges or growls at dogs or people, start with Dealing with Aggression and Reactivity in Dogs. If you are working on several things at once, membership is usually better value.
Are the courses suitable for beginners?
Yes. They assume no prior training knowledge and teach the mechanics from the start. The aggression and reactivity course is also used by trainers, so it goes deeper for those who want it.
Can a course fix aggression on its own?
It can teach you the framework, the thresholds and the exercises, and for many reactive dogs that is enough to make real progress. If your dog has bitten, if the behaviour is escalating, or if you are not seeing change, book a 1-to-1. In person locally or remote by video.
Do you use any aversive tools in the courses?
No. No prong collars, e-collars, slip leads or check chains are taught or recommended anywhere in our courses. Everything is reward-based, no fear, no pain.
Can I get personal help while doing a course?
Yes. Membership includes live group calls where you can bring your own case, and remote 1-to-1 sessions can be booked separately at any point.
Are the courses available outside the UK?
Yes. Nationally and worldwide. We work with clients internationally, including UK expats and owners abroad.
How long before I see results?
Loose-lead mechanics usually show a visible difference within the first week of short daily practice. Reactivity work is measured in weeks to months, because you are changing an emotional response rather than teaching a trick.
Can I cancel the membership?
It is a monthly membership at £43 per month, so it runs month to month. If you have questions about the membership specifically, ask us through the enquiry form and we'll answer before you sign up.
Do you also do in-person training?
Yes. 1-to-1 sessions at your home or outdoors locally across Glasgow, Greater Glasgow, South and North Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, Falkirk and East Ayrshire, plus seminars and workshops.
